A lot of people say a lot of things in our industry regarding the way things should be done.
But every now and again you read or hear something that just stays with you. Even if it’s something you already knew but just hadn’t articulated it in such an enlightening way. And you find yourself referring to it, using it in meetings to illustrate a point or passing it on as advice to the graduates in the department because it’s thought provoking and timeless advice.
Here are a few of ours:
***”The creative adult is the child who survived.”*** – Ursula K. Le Guin
Before we can solve a business problem with creativity we have to explore the options by ‘playing’ with all the possible solutions. The joy and enthusiasm that you apply shows in the work that you do.
Tom, designer.
***”Always keep your eyes and ears open, as inspiration can hit at any point.”* **- My first boss.
We draw creativity from our life experiences. So listen to people, understand the way they behave and feel. Learn to see the world through their eyes – differently.
Richard, creative head.
***”It’s taken me all my life to learn what not to play”* **- Dizzy Gillespie
Whether it’s space around the focal point you are trying to create, or allowing the reader to complete the circle – leaving space in our work so the mind can fill the gaps is key.
Pete, senior creative.
***“You can’t bore people into buying your product, you can only interest them into buying it.”* **- David Ogilvy
Too many brands behave like their audience is just out there waiting to hear their message. They’re not, in fact they actively resist anything they perceive to be advertising. We have to be difficult to ignore and deliver content in the right place at the right time in the right way if we are to build meaningful relationships.
Doug, creative director.
We never get tired of referring to these great pieces of advice and, it seems, every creative has at least one of these gems up their sleeve.
What’s yours? We’d love to hear them.
