**2013 is fast getting a reputation as the year of the rebrand.**
Everyone from big names to lesser known companies have spent the first half of the year revamping their brands, and giving their logos a much needed refresh. Your corporate logo speaks volumes about your business, so it’s important it acts as an accurate reflection of your brand.
So as we enter into the second half of the year (when did *that* happen?!), we take a look at 10 big brand logo redesigns of 2013 so far:
1. Facebook

April saw Facebook streamline its logo to surprisingly little fanfare. In fact, most users probably didn’t even notice when the new logo was introduced. From a design point of view though, the changes here are pretty striking. The new ‘f’ logo has waved goodbye to the shading, and sees the bottom of the letter disappear into negative space.
2. Instagram

Instagram is another brand (link: https://www.superdream.co.uk/creative-design-trends/ text: following the trend for simple, flatter branding). It’s new logo holds on to its recognisable script typography, but moves things forward with a cleaner, more fluid typeface. The new design makes the old one look clumsy in comparison, whilst still being memorable and instantly recognisable as Instagram.
3. Spotify

Music streaming giant, Spofify, revamped its logo back in March; losing the quirky, 3D version in favour of a more subdued, two-dimensional look. The bubbly, bouncy identity has been replaced with a more mature and professional logo. The new logo still focuses on the brand’s green colour, helping to reinforce brand identity. This change is reminiscent of last year’s eBay logo redesign; something which (link: https://www.superdream.co.uk/logo-redesign-disasters/ text: didn’t go down well) with web users.
4. ITV
(image: https://www.superdream.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/itv.jpg alt: ITV logo redesign – before and after)
Another logo redesign which caused quite a stir, was ITV’s. Rather than following the trend for minimalist design, the TV channel opted for quite the opposite, with curves, colour, overlapping letters, and crazy typography. Packed full of personality, this redesign helps create a unified identity across all channels. 5. American Airlines
(image: https://www.superdream.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/american-airlines1.jpg alt: American Airlines logo redesign)
American Airlines’ Helvetica logo – complete with flying Eagle – is bowing out after over 25 years’ loyal service. The simpler, streamlined logo always sees the back of the red and blue branding; only remaining in the wing icon. The redesign has been met with a mixed reception, so only time will tell if it is lasts as long as the old design.
6. 21st Century Fox
(image: https://www.superdream.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/20th-c-fox.jpg alt: 20th Century Fox logo redesign – before and after)
On the surface, this seems like a particularly strange logo redesign – why change 20th Century Fox now? With NewsCorp splitting into two parts, this is essentially a business move. The monochrome look still features the iconic spotlights, but is a far cry from the one we’re used to. To make matters even more confusing, the home entertainment element of the brand will remain as 20th Century Fox with the original logo. For now at least.
7. UEFA
(image: https://www.superdream.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/uefa.jpg alt: UEFA Logo redesign – before and after)
Football association UEFA have overhauled their digital, print, and broadcast branding for the 2016 Euro’s and the 2018 World Cup. The new logo consists of a national football team shirt inside a heart. This is said to inspire national pride in football, and convey the brand value of ‘play with heart’.
8. Doritos
(image: https://www.superdream.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/doritos.jpg alt: Doritos logo redesign – before and after)
March saw popular crisp brand, Doritos redesign their logo and packaging to give a unified and consistent global brand identity. The clean new logo still focuses on their signature triangular shape, but removes the excessive use of colour the fontface is also streamlined, to give a clear and simple new brand identity.
9. VH1
(image: https://www.superdream.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/vh1-2.jpg alt: VH1 logo redesign – before and after)
Music and relative TV channel VH1 have also rebranded their logo in the first half of the year. The new identity – which incorporates a ‘+1’ – is said to signify how the channel is “the ultimate mash up of music + pop culture + nostalgia”. The new simplified, geometric and single colour design is much cleaner; but the ‘+1’ aspect leads to confusion; people have been assuming the logo is referring to an additional channel.
10. 2018 Olympics
(image: https://www.superdream.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/olympics.jpg alt: 2018 Olympics logo redesign – before and after)
The final logo redesign on our list belongs to the 2018 Olympics. It incorporates the five traditional Korean colours, and a symbol made up of Korean characters that spell the ‘P’ sound for Pyeong and the ‘ch’ sound of Chang. As with all sporting logos, there have been a number of criticisms but it has had a largely positive reception.
What do you think of these logos? Which would redesign do you like best?
It’s not just logo redesigns we’ve been admiring this year, there have been some great adverts that have sparked our imaginations. Click here to see our (link: https://www.superdream.co.uk/best-viral-adverts-2013/ text: 10 favourite viral adverts).
