Tools of the Trade: FileZilla

One of the many tools in the web industry is a file transfer protocol (FTP), allowing the easy uploading of files to web servers.

This application acts as a digital interface between 2 places of storage for files, much like copying a document onto a memory stick (e.g. USB stick).

One of the most used and powerful FTPs is FileZilla, as it is free. It is free because it is open source, which meaning the code that makes up the application is visible, so you can check exactly what the application does, and make changes to it if you like.

A very useful feature of FileZilla is the “Site Manager” – a list for all of the added web servers/sites, this enables quick connection, without having to recall server addresses, or login information.

There are many file transmission applications, however this one is built to work on every operation system (win/mac/lin), is free (!), bugs are identified and fixed by the community, and it has been around for years which means it must be good! Filezilla should meet the majority of needs for all users, and is definitely an essential tool for any techy!
