The streamlined website was chosen from 98 entries for its “well thought out, yet understated design”. The judges, who included Design Museum director Deyan Sudjic and David Cameron, voted unanimously in favour of the website. GOV.uk beat off competition from the worlds of fashion, furniture, and architecture.

Why was it chosen?

GOV.uk is a streamlined version of government resources, designed at making the life of the general public easier.

The clean, elegant, and fresh website offers all information upfront, and takes the stress out of paying taxes, getting a passport, and everything in between. Couple this with a classic, British-designed, typeface; and the website becomes a benchmark for patriotism and clean (link: https://www.superdream.co.uk/creative/web-design/ text: website design).

The website was designed and built by the (link: http://digital.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/ text: Government Digital Service) and was described by David Cameron as an example of “world class design talent” that enhanced “the modern relationship between the public and the government”.

GOV.uk takes its place next to other Design of the Year winners including 2012 victor, Barber Osgerby, the creative team behind the London Olympic Torch.

What can you learn from this website?

While you might not be a government body, you can take inspiration from this for your own business website.

– Is all your information easy to find? Can visitors to your website instantly find what they’re looking for, or do they spend ages hunting around before leaving disappointed?

– Do you use a clean, user friendly design? Or are you overcomplicating matters with fancy – but useless – design elements?

– How is your website branded? Does it meant with your business brand guidelines, or does it almost act as a stand-alone element?

– What does your website say about your business?

Internet users are increasingly hungry for information, but are also increasingly lazy. Your website needs to answer all their questions – and more – in a clean, simple, and user friendly way. By taking inspiration from the GOV.uk website, you can help increase your online presence.
