Recruiting the perfect account manager

*Group Account Director Mark McDonagh describes the three things he considers above all else when recruiting for his team…*

Superdream is growing rapidly. With a raft of new clients on board, it won’t be long before we start another round of recruitment.

With this in mind, I’ve already begun to gather my thoughts about exactly who I need to bring in to move the team forward. For this blog, I’ve broken it down into three areas.

**Personality**

Whoever comes into the team will have to have a personality that fits. If I get that wrong, the new addition could find it very difficult to settle, or they could affect the balance of a well-performing team.

**Experience**

The next area to consider is experience. In our world, career length doesn’t equal relevant experience. With the requirements of certain clients leaning towards digital channels, our new account manager may need to have strong digital skills. These skills are often more common in younger candidates and not necessarily in someone with an additional few years of general experience. It’s a lesson I’ve learned over the years: respect and trust an individual’s knowledge, not how long they’ve been in the business.

**Adaptability**

With around 50 employees, we aren’t the world’s smallest agency and everyone is still very much involved in the day-to-day happenings of the business. Agency life is ever changing. Clients’ priorities change, budgets get pulled, heaven forbid – we might even lose a client. With this in mind, our new account manager must be able to adapt to these types of changes. There might be more responsibilities, different needs, new clients – all within the first week. (It happened to me at my first agency.) The adaptability to cope is an essential trait in potential candidates.

**Conclusion**

As I write this, another brief comes in to the team, so the need for a new recruit is even closer. Using these broad points as a guide, I can begin the process of assessing potential candidates as their CVs land. I’ll ask them all the same questions, give them the same scenarios and hope they want to work here as much as the rest of the team, and become our next perfect account manager.
