**Launched yesterday (Tuesday 18th September), Twitter’s new (link: http://blog.twitter.com/2012/09/because-you-have-more-to-show.html text: header photo) is your chance to make your presence on the site ‘more meaningful.’**

The photo – which has dimensions of 1252×626 px – is displayed right at the top of your profile. It gives you a chance to further customise your page. Your header photo is independent from your (link: https://www.superdream.co.uk/twitter-backgrounds-for-business/ text: Twitter background) but is still brilliant news for your small business?

Why? Because it opens up a whole new window for branding and marketing.

Features of the New Twitter Profile

It’s also great news, because the header image is visible on mobile and tablet devices. This helps you consistently and effectively brand your Twitter page to anyone and everyone viewing your profile.

Much like Facebook, Twitter is beginning to place increased emphasis on the images you share on the site. The new profile makes your photo stream much more prominent on computers, iPhones, iPads, and Andriods.

On the old profile, these galleries weren’t visible on mobile devices. Now though, users can browse your photo stream, and even enlarge pictures for a better view. All at the tap of a screen.

Making the Most of Your Twitter Header Photo

Much like your (link: http://www.buzzom.com/2012/08/top-tips-for-your-facebook-cover-photo/ text: Facebook cover photo), Twitter’s new header image helps keep your profile simple and consistent. It is a great opportunity for branding, and incorporating your corporate identity into your page.

To make the most of it, you should upload a complimentary background image and profile image. This will help to cement your branding, and help you create a consistent social media presence.

Some profiles already making the most of their header photo include (link: https://twitter.com/breakingnews text: Breaking News), America’s (link: https://twitter.com/todayshow text: Today Show) and TV presenter (link: https://twitter.com/ryanseacrest text: Ryan Secreast).

What Can You Do?

As these accounts show, you can be as simple or creative as you like with this new feature. We especially like the colour-contrast used on the Breaking News page. It is consistent, instantly recognisable, and helps tie the whole page together.

Or you can be as creative as Ryan Secreast; using a larger version of your profile picture for the header photo. He has used a promotional shot for the new series of American Idol; showing that you too can use this as a great marketing opportunity.

What do you think of this new feature? Is it a good addition? Or is it a carbon-copy of Facebook’s cover photo?
