Who says advertising’s evil?

Rape is a tricky topic. And for some, the issue of consent is a grey area. A lot of recent high-profile cases like Ched Evans’s only muddy the water.

Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police needed to clear up the confusion and show young people – especially men – how simple it is to know when you have consent and when you don’t.

We were thrilled to win the project – it’s a topic our whole team feels strongly about. And with a host of clients already from fostering to public health, it’s fair to say we believe our marketing skills are used best when they’re used for good.

So, we developed a campaign to educate young people about consent, what it means and that it’s never the victim’s fault. Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police already had an initiative called Stop Rape Now, so we created a visual identity for that, too.

**Don’t mix it up**

Using a graphic tool to literally mix up the word ‘consent’ to say ‘no’, we highlight the importance of being clear about what the other person wants – or doesn’t.

We know people (particularly our young, male target audience) don’t like being told what to do. And if you’re not careful, campaigns sharing advice – especially from authorities like the police – can come across as lecturing, or patronising. Even worse? Totally unnoticed.

Our Don’t Mix It Up campaign uses our target audience’s reasoning, excuses, wrong ideas and language to educate rather than blame them and help them make the right decisions in the future.

It ran across print and social media, including a Snapchat campaign which received 25,000 views in just one month!
