The latest social media craze to hit the World Wide Web is Pinterest. The virtual ‘pin board’ has acquired nearly 12 million users since its launch in March 2010. The latest photo-sharing/social networking site mash-up is a great opportunity for businesses.
If your company has images to share, a story to tell or a creative edge; Pinterest could be of interest to you. Here we look at why Pinterest isn’t just another social networking site:
What Can You Use It For?
The photo-sharing website is used to ‘pin’ images onto themed boards to share with their friends. Popular themes include fitness, fashion and weddings; however you don’t have to just stick to these ideas. If you see something you like, simply ‘re-pin’ it from the original user, and share it on your boards.
So how does this work for businesses? Users can add captions and URLs to their images, which provide great link building opportunities for the original pinner. If you pin popular content that gets shared, you can increase the number of links – and visits – to your site.
It’s important to remember however, that as well as pinning your own original content is it good ‘Pinterest etiquette’ to re-pin from other users. This will get your profile noticed and is a great networking opportunity.
